DFSCA Biennial Review Workbook

01

The biennial review is required by the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (DFSCA). The Department of Education established rules regarding compliance with the DFSCA, known as the US Department of Education General Administrative Regulations, Part 86 (EDGAR Part 86). EDGAR Part 86 requires colleges and universities to annually notify employees and students of alcohol and other drug (AOD) policies, legal and campus sanctions, health risks, and programs and resources available to the campus community. The EDGAR Part 86 also requires campuses to conduct a biennial review of the AOD prevention program. At its most basic form, the biennial review consists of evaluating the AOD program and identifying areas for improvement.

When was the last time your institution evaluated the policies in place to keep students safe? Have you conducted an audit of your policy webpages to determine whether they are easily accessible and free of broken links or outdated information? Over time, it might be easy to rely on policies that have been in place for a while because they are what you are used to, or maybe it's what you inherited when you took on a role. We shouldn't feel stuck with outdated, counterproductive, or cumbersome policies and procedures. There's a better way!
